At the end of December it was revealed that the matter was no longer being handled by Colonel Darby, and on the 5th January, 1949, he stated that he had so far been unable to ascertain who is dealing with it in the Colonial Office.
It is an unfortunate saga.
I and my Committee, in turn, have to face a group of very loyal British Merchant Houses, who accepted heavy liabilities in helping to pursue the war. They did so on assurances by H.M.G.'s authorities that they would be safeguarded.
I hope very much I may appeal to you to ask a member of your Ministry to look into this case. believe it to be a genuine one of hardship.
